I Was Accepted!

Well it's official! I am a volunteer for Guide Dogs for the Blind! I got my confirmation letter today! Kind of late though! Should I tell them that I have had one of their dogs for a couple of weeks?

Anyway, some photos.....

And on to the rest of the post!
Okay, so this post is going to be about GDB and what they want their puppy raisers to do! Then you guys will comment and tell us about your puppy schools! It will be a good way for all of us to learn about the other service dog companies! :D

  2. School: Guide Dogs of America
    Pup Name: Westin
Commands: They don't ask puppy raisers to teach a lot of commands because they have special ways of teaching many commands in formal training. The ones that we are asked to teach are:
    Sit
    Stay
    Down
    Come (Formal Recall)
    Stand
"Westin" (the pup's name, should come when called)

Some puppy raisers (mysellf included) also like to teach the "leave it" command. Some puppy raisers (not me personally) use more commands like "wait," "here," etc, but when trainers have spoken at our meetings they discourage the use of excessive commands...they don't want the pups to get overwhelmed or confused during IFT :)

    Cool idea for a thread!

  3. Cabana is also from GDB, and our commands are the same as yours. Cabana is very good at all of the commands, but I'd say "wait" is her specialty. I can put a piece of kibble in front of her and tell her to wait, and she will wait patiently until I tell her she can eat it (although she sometimes drools in anticipation).

  4. Hey Mitch, what's with the double tie-down on Meade in the photos? Is one not enough for this rambunctious puppy?!

  5. I won't speak for Mitch, but I think that one might be a leash ;)
